GED wins Most Innovative Machine award
GED Integrated Solutions, the US-based machinery manufacturer, best known for its Intercept Warm Edge spacer system and glass processing equipment, has been named the winner in the 2008 Crystal Achievement Awards “Most Innovative Machine - Frame/Sash/Door Fabrication" category for its SmartLoad Welding System.
Sponsored by Window & Door magazine, these highly regarded annual awards recognise significant innovations and achievements in window and door technology, manufacturing and marketing. This 2008 recognition marks GED's seventh Crystal Achievement Award, and is the second award for GED this year, having previously been a winner for “Supply Network Mastery” in the 2008 Progressive Manufacturing Awards.
The new SmartLoad Welding System is an automated PVCU profile welder that delivers speed and accuracy and increased productivity of 400+ cycles per shift. SmartLoad, developed under GED’s i-3 advanced technology programme, requires less manual intervention and enables higher productivity, resulting in decreased lead times and reduced costs.
The advanced automation of the system allows one operator to achieve the work of two. The SmartLoad i-3 module features controlled-pace operation that affords the operator the ease to simply upload the schedule and pre-load profiles, with no stopping or interruptions. The profiles then run through the SmartWeld i-3 continuously, welding one set of frames while the operator is loading the next. This non-stop operation and quick changeover boosts throughput by up to 70 percent.
The machine's multi-level fixturing, with independent referenced weld fixtures allow for stronger, more consistent welds and cleaning, plus accurate sizing within each of the six tiers. SmartLoad can accept up to 2.4m x 3m (8 x 10 ft) frames.
